Every July
Comic-Con International
The world's largest comics and popular-culture convention takes over the Convention Center and spills across the entire Gaslamp Quarter every July. Hotel rooms sell out city-wide months in advance; badges sell within hours of release. Even without a ticket, the off-site activations, cosplay on the streets, and the energy radiating through downtown are worth experiencing.
Mid-June through July 4th weekend
San Diego County Fair
Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar
One of the largest county fairs in the United States runs for nearly a month at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Headline concerts, carnival rides, livestock competitions, flower shows, and the deep-fried-everything midway make it an annual summer pilgrimage for San Diego families. Locals know to arrive on a weekday morning to beat the weekend crowds.
Third weekend of July
San Diego Pride
One of California's largest LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations draws hundreds of thousands of participants each July. The parade routes through Hillcrest and the festival grounds spread across Balboa Park. The Spirit of Stonewall Rally the preceding Friday evening and the parade Saturday morning are the twin anchors of a full weekend.
First full weekend of December
Balboa Park December Nights
San Diego's most beloved winter tradition fills Balboa Park every early December. Holiday lights illuminate the Prado, all park museums offer free admission on Friday evening, international food pavilions line the promenades, and live performances run on multiple stages. The event draws 350,000-plus visitors over two nights, yet remains free to attend.
Saturdays year-round
Little Italy Mercato
San Diego's premier farmers market runs every Saturday morning year-round along Date Street in Little Italy. Dozens of certified-farmers stalls sit alongside local food vendors, artisan craft booths, and prepared food. Arrive before 10am for the best selection; the bocce ball court and espresso bars on the surrounding blocks keep the neighborhood lively through early afternoon.
Wednesdays year-round, late afternoon–evening
Ocean Beach Farmers Market
Newport Avenue transforms into a street market every Wednesday evening, year-round. Local produce, handcrafted goods, and live music give it a neighborhood block-party quality that the Saturday markets don't quite replicate. The proximity to Sunset Cliffs makes it a natural pairing — market first, then a walk to the cliffs for the sunset.
Fat Tuesday each year
Gaslamp Quarter Mardi Gras
The Gaslamp Quarter throws its biggest street party of the year on Fat Tuesday, with bead throws from balconies, live bands on multiple stages, and the Victorian storefronts of Fifth and Sixth Avenues draped in purple, gold, and green. The Gaslamp's density of bars and restaurants makes it a natural fit for a New Orleans-style street celebration.
January and September (twice yearly)
San Diego Restaurant Week
Citywide — participating restaurants across all neighborhoods
Twice a year, San Diego's restaurant community offers prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus at set price points across a 10-day window. It's the city's best opportunity to try highly regarded kitchens at a lower barrier — and local dining writers track which participating restaurants turn their Restaurant Week menus into full-price repeats.
November each year
San Diego Craft Beer Week
Citywide — breweries across San Diego County
San Diego's nationally recognized craft brewing scene throws a week-long celebration in November, with tap takeovers, collaborative releases, brewery tours, and pairing dinners spread across more than 150 participating producers county-wide. The county's brewing density — among the highest in the United States — makes the geography of the week genuinely impressive.
October each year
San Diego International Film Festival
Various cinemas across San Diego
An annual fall showcase for independent, international, and documentary films, with red-carpet screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and an awards ceremony. The festival has grown into a respected stop on the fall festival circuit and typically includes local San Diego productions alongside international premieres.
